IMPROVING PATIENT & VISITOR JOURNEY

OUR SCHEME SIMPLIFIES THE PATIENT & VISITOR JOURNEY

We conducted detailed consultations with patients and staff about their frustrations with the previous system and their expectations for the new one. Many told us that finding their way around was stressful and confusing. Patients with dementia, cognitive or learning difficulties found it especially difficult to find the area they needed, or to pinpoint exactly where they were. Inadequate wayfinding was a significant cost to RCH in the form of lost time giving directions and appointment delays.

Our new scheme simplifies the patient and visitor journey. We separated the site into four zones, easily identified through colour coding, and used finger posts, maps, consistent environmental graphics and icons which lead visitors to the right zone, building, floor, area and, finally, unit or ward. Potentially confusing destination names were simplified, and crucially we acknowledged the need for flexibility throughout; as the hospital inevitably changes, so our modular designs will adapt, saving further costs.
