WE FOCUSSED ON CREATING A PLAYFUL & WELCOMING AREA
The National Trust’s Saltram House sits amongst walled gardens in a large public park overlooking the River Plym. But with so much on hand in the park to enjoy for free, the stunning Georgian mansion house and magical walled gardens are often overlooked by the huge numbers of visitors.
To change this, the National Trust asked 20/20 to help convert one of the old coach houses into a welcome centre to increase the number of paying visitors and people signing up to become National Trust members. We focussed on creating a playful and welcoming area, deliberately different to a traditional retail area, where staff and volunteers can chat comfortably with visitors and sell tickets and memberships.
To hint at the treasures to be discovered inside the walls, a huge old kitchen dresser was transformed into cabinet of curiosities. At the heart of the centre, we designed and built a huge round table with an illustrated map of the house and grounds under the glass surface, where staff and volunteers can gather round with visitors to help them plan their day, as well as complete membership applications.
The centre has been so successful, the team at Saltram have been swamped with visitors!
