The Old Sardine Factory completed to revitalise Looe

Old Sardine Factory heritage centre

The team at 20/20 has completed the installation of an exciting new community and heritage hub at The Old Sardine Factory in Looe. We worked with the clients, Looe Harbour Commissioners, to develop an interactive and immersive visitor centre with features appealing to all ages, interest and abilities.

Officially opened on Monday 2 July, the visitor centre is part of Looe Harbour Commissioners’ vision for the redevelopment of their Sardine Factory site on the quay side of West Looe. As part of a wider project designed to regenerate the harbour town and boost the local economy, the exhibition is a first class visitor experience and educational resource that will interest visitors and the local community alike.

Our MD, Jaimie Sibert said, “The Old Sardine Factory has been really rewarding project for 20/20 to work on. Our team’s full range of creative and practical skills have been brought into play on this project, to deliver a truly immersive and engaging experience for everyone to enjoy throughout the year.

“With our base in Falmouth, we particularly enjoy working on projects that promote and showcase Cornwall, and we are proud to have been able to use our experience of delivering creative and engaging visitor experiences to benefit our home county.”

From navigating the huge 13m x 11m map on the floor, to taking a virtual ride beyond the Banjo Pier with the Looe RNLI, the centre brings Looe’s stories to life using video, sound, objects, games, and even touch and smell when discovering smugglers’ contraband in a cut away boat hull.

20/20’s experience in working with the design and build of visitor centres, exhibitions and town-wide interpretation schemes allowed us to see the big picture in this project. The building and displays are tailored to encourage greater engagement with Looe as a whole, telling and exploring its stories using a combination of archive and contemporary sources presented using sensory and digital media.

Jaimie explains, “We designed the centre in a way that allows visitors to connect with what makes Looe unique – to see beyond the idea of a generic ‘Cornish seaside town’, and to create a space where the local community can feel a greater part of where their Looe has come from, and where it is headed.”
